NLP Neuro-linguistic Programming Therapy

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of self communication. How we communicate with ourselves through our beliefs, values and expectations will greatly influence our outcomes. The meaning of the communication is the response you get. It is the ability to change the process by which we experience reality.

The resources an individual needs to effect a change are already within themselves. It is recognising there is a positive intention motivating every behaviour. NLP studies how we structure our subjective experience – how we think about our values and beliefs and how we create our emotional states and then how we construct our internal world from our experiences and give it meaning.

The name NLP was coined by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. Their work evolved from their study of expert communicators such as Milton Erickson, Virginia Satire and Fritz Perls. What Bandler and Grinder discovered through a method they called “modelling” was that if any person could achieve a result then other people could be taught to do the same thing by following the same basic actions, including thought patterns of the person they were modelling. NLP is the method for modelling excellence so it can be duplicated.

The term Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) comes from the three areas it brings together:

NEUROLOGY The mind and how we think
LINGUISTICS How we use language and how it affects us
PROGRAMMING How we sequence our actions to achieve our goals

The NLP practitioner’s goal is to change a person’s state and re-programme that person’s beliefs about themselves. The NLP practitioner attempts to discern how a client perceives and relates to identity, personal beliefs and life goal issues. NLP can help people to replace false or negative perceptions, with positive, life affirming beliefs.

NLP helps in all aspects of self-development and will help you achieve new and better behaviours and ways of thinking. It can help you:

  • Choose your emotional state.
  • Gives you an ability to shift your thinking by chunking up, down or sideways.
  • Ability to associate or disassociate according to the circumstances.
  • Change perceptual positions to view something from all positions.
  • Respecting other views of the world.
  • Adopting an outcome orientation to help achieve your goals.
  • Choose and change your unwanted beliefs.
  • Enriches your thinking by using all your senses.
  • Use of anchors to enter a preferred/positive resourceful state.
